I have the day off from work so I'll be going to the University to get all my school stuff straightened out. I started signing up for classes but I have to get them to do over rides for me to get into some that I need, and then others I want are now full and I want to figure out if I can get on a waiting list or something. Surely people will end up dropping classes right before school starts back. Hopefully. I also have to go to Financial Aid and get all of my loans worked out. I still haven't been on campus so today will be a totally new experience.
I work the rest of the week, with Sunday being my only day off. Working so much really has made time just fly by. News for this week.... Lucie ordered a queen sized air mattress off of Amazon and it arrived this week, so now she has a bed of her own. Sydney picked up a queen sized bed from her mom's house in Waimea because she doesn't like her twin anymore, so now we have a twin-sized couch. Haha! She brought her dog, Tucker, back with her to spend a few days with us. It's been fun having him around but I'm glad we don't have pets. Too much work. But Sydney and Lucie are set on getting a cat. We'll see :P
We went to a cook out last night at our friend Blake's house. We had a really good time hanging out with new people. We brought Tucker along and he had the night of his life playing with all the dogs they had. Over the years Blake's room mates have collected all these stray dogs, most of whom have had an abusive past. But they were all having a good time last night :)
I'm hoping to buy a bike soon, and a desk. But I have to wait for my next pay check... I wish they wouldn't disappear so quickly!! I work to keep myself fed, I realized. No fun!
Love you all!

Update!
Mom's boxes finally arrived! It was a lot of fun unpacking all of my things I had done without for so long. Even better, mom sent two boxes full of kitchen stuff- Pampered Chef and Tupperware, just what our kitchen needed to fully function :)
I moved my bed around and put up the tapestry Bridget bought me last year. Mom shipped the comforter- I found it on sale at TJMaxx for $30 a few months before I came. What looks like a hunk of quartz sitting to the left of my bed is actually my favorite lamp of all time- a salt rock lamp! Bridget and I bought it together and she was so sweet giving it to me before I left. But it is so heavy that I almost didn't get to bring it- thankfully Matt snuck it into his suitcase when he came to surprise me :) It puts off a warm relaxing glow and apprently it puts salt ions into the air and that's good for you. I didn't even believe it put off salt ions until puddles of salt started to form on my wooden floor- I suppose where the air is so moist here, it recrystallizes the salt coming out of the rock. It had never done that before it came to Hawaii.
From the foot of my bed. My new dresser!! I absolutely love it. Especially now that I have all my favorite clutter on it, and my books :) Thank you thank you thank you mom for making my room home again.
In the living room. The first door is mine. I found that big fan on the wall at the Goodwill for 99 cents!! Mom sent the wall sticker with the words that's under the window looking into the kitchen. If you can't see it, it says "Live well Laugh often Love much"
This week has been so enjoyable. I worked every day, which has come to feel like the normal routine. I enjoy the morning time I have before I walk to work. And luckily I don't mind walking to and from work either- I've realized that I can read and walk at the same time :P But even better is when I come out of work to find Matthew waiting to walk me, or even better, drive me! His room mate guys let him borrow their vehicles quite often now :)The best part of the week is all I'm going to talk about- the weekend! I had Saturday off and Matt had an invitation from his room mates for the two of us to go with them to Southpoint- the southern most point of the island, and thus the southern most point of the United States! We got up early, loaded into a truck, and headed out. We had a trailer attached with a 4 wheeler, some coolers, and plenty of towels. It was about a 2 hour drive, and the last bit was 4 wheel drive only- offroading. We set up camp at the shore where there was a quiet inlet with a boat ramp. There were lots of locals there with their keikis (kay-ee-kees, children) swimming and fishing because there isn't much wake in the water there and it's safe.
Here's a photo courtesy of Matt's new iPhone :P
It's also nice because that spot is halfway between the two main attractions of Southpoint- the cliffs that are the actual southern most point, and Green Sands Beach which is just as the name says- a beach with actual green sand.
See this picture for a better idea: http://www.bigislanddivers.com/Green_sand_beach_A.jpg
And Green Sands: http://s3.amazonaws.com/picable/2009/06/19/1075985_Sea-beach-with-green-sand_620.jpg
I know that looks phenomenal, and it really is!! But you can't even imagine how remote this is. From the spot we parked it HAS to be a 2 hour walk, and on the worst terrain. It's really dusty, rocky ground and you follow paths made by 4 wheelers and 4 wheel drive vehicles that are full of ruts and holes.. I can't imagine walking it. But on a 4-wheeler, it's a different story!! Such a fun time. Matt's room mate Nick and his girlfriend Pua rode us down to the beach and we made the hike down to the water. If you look at the picture again it is nearly impossible to see where the path is... That's because there really isn't much of one. It is carved into the rocks to the left side. When we got down there, there were about 10 people but none in the water because the waves were huge and it was intimidating. But I couldn't wait to get in- we all just dove under through the waves when the came in, until we were far enough out that they weren't breaking and it was comfortable to swim. But we couldn't go far out at all because apparently the rip current is really really bad there. No thank you!
Pua and I on the 4-wheeler. I had no idea that I was in for the ride of my life... this girl is adventurous, to say the least! We spent the rest of the day relaxing by the truck in chairs, with music playing and the sun shining. At the end of the day we drove the truck to Southpoint.
You are not ready for this: http://www.danhagerman.com/images/South-Point-Cliffs-HDR.jpg
Amazing, right? What if I told you that the wooden structure you see in the right hand corner is a JUMPING PLATFORM? And then what if I said that Matt and I jumped off of the United States yesterday?! Because we definitely did! Not from the platform, but from the rocks right beside of it (in front of it if you're looking at the picture). It took a lot of mustering of courage, and a few tiptoes up to the edge, but we finally held hands and took two steps right off the cliff. I can hardly believe it. But let me tell you that was the fastest moment of my entire life. My eyes instinctively closed and then I hit the water, that's how quick it seemed. It was a rush but it's a rough impact. The second time I did it I ended up with a nosebleed. There's a metal ladder hanging off the side of the cliff for your convenience... not! It's too short so there's rope tied to the bottom and you have to wait until the water rushes in and then grab the rope and hoist yourself up the ladder, using only your arms until about the 5th rung when you can step with your feet. The ladder swings freely. NO, I did not climb the ladder. (Mom- this reminded me too much of the ladders off the cliff in Lost and how they all fell apart. There was no way I could do it!) I swam along the coast with Matt's other room mate, Willy, until we met a point where the water had caused the cliff to crumble a bit and we could climb up the rocks. It was a bit tricky because I had to come in with the water and when it went high on the rocks I had to grab as high as I could and hang on because as the water went back out, it pulls you with it. But I made it just fine :) It was exhilirating and so fun to beat my fears. A few years ago there's no way Brittany ever would have jumped off the United States :D
That pretty much beats anything there is to say about today. Matt and I went to the mall to get him some more board shorts and use an American Eagle coupon, then to Walmart for other necessary things on his list. As we should have expected, that ended up taking all day and we realized we hadn't eaten lunch yet at 4 o'clock. By 7 we had figured it out- we ordered a vegetarian pizza for Lucie and I and he got his cheesy chicken alfredo. Now I've used up the rest of my night checking email and writing this.. I'm headed to bed shortly so I'll be well rested for tomorrow. I don't have to work until 10, but being away this weekend means there's nothing in the fridge and I need to go to the grocery store for milk and something for lunch tomorrow. Hooray for having a grocery store just minutes away!
Love you all.

Relaxing Sunday
Today I enjoyed sleeping in later than I have since I've been here- till almost noon! I finally had enough sleeping when I was getting sweaty from my room heating up. Lucie and I took it easy for a while, not sure how we could best spend the day, when Sydney unexpectedly came home for lunch with Brian. After they ate they let us ride back with them, since they were almost done working. While they finished up, Lucie and I walked down the road their work is on (which follows the coast) to check out the beaches. The beaches here in Hilo can't really be thought of in the same way you usually think of a beach. As in, there is no sandy part to lay out on- it's all rocks. But along that strip there are some nice pieces of coast that have really shallow areas protected by rocks further out, making perfect spots for swimming.
The first one was jam-packed with local families, so we kept walking to the next one. Along the way we found a mango tree that was dropping fruit! They were a small, sweet variety and we had so much fun scrounging the ground for good ones. We ended up with almost 20 mangoes stuffed in my book bag- delicious!! The next beach was called Onekahakaha Beach Park (Own-ay-ka-ha-ka-ha); I'd never been there before. As we were walking down the road, headed to the water, I spotted a guy playing Portuguese horseshoes that had on the same board shorts that Matt wears. All of a sudden I realized it was him!! I couldn't believe it- I didn't even know he was at the beach! He was there with his room mate Willy. He's actually still there now, lucky guy! :P
Anyways. Lucie and I walked down to the water, hoping to jump in right away, when she looked up and said "Does it look like it's going to rain?"- I barely had time to decide for myself when it started down pouring. We sat under shelter and peeled mangoes by hand while we waited for Sydney and Brian to come get us. In the meantime ambulances started showing up, then a helicopter was patrolling the water, hovering and searching for something. We asked around and found out that someone was missing out in the water =/ The ocean can be a dangerous place. But the helicopter was looking way far out beyond the rocks, and anyone with sense would know not to swim out that far where the waves are breaking on the barrier... I still hope they found the person though, and saved them. We never found out because Brian came and took us home.
Then we all went grocery shopping, and when we got back Sydney left to stay the night at Brian's house. Lucie and I were excited to cook dinner because we had dreamed up a recipe with the mangoes- sauté garlic, onion, and red bell pepper in olive oil, add tons of mashed mango, and let it reduce down to a nice thick sauce. Then sauté pieces of locally caught Ahi that we bought today, and some shrimp we bought yesterday. It turned out GREAT! We ate it with rice and a spinach side that Lucie made. One of our flower-growers at work had brought in a big box of fresh green onions and the biggest spinach I've ever seen to give to us, and I got sent home with a big bag. Lucie cut long pieces of green onion and sautéed them in olive oil and garlic with full leaves of spinach, making a wilty leafy side dish. I was not very fond of it but it is healthy so I ate it. It was too mushy, haha.
Since then we've washed lots of dishes, taken down the laundry from the line, hung up wet towels from the washer, folded clothes... boring stuff. Lucie found a job that she's really interested in advertised on Craigslist today- it's a one year student internship for just 15 hours a week, paying $10-15 an hour! (The ad didn't say exactly how much) It was ambiguous as to what she'd be doing exactly, but it said she'd be doing vessel-based research on the water quality of the Hilo bay. Very cool! She's excited because it's in her field of study (Science) and basically exactly what she was looking for. She sent in her resume and they emailed back already, saying she can interview in two weeks! So everyone keep her in your thoughts and prayers :)
I'm excited because I have yet another day off tomorrow! Three day weekend, oh yeah :D Lucie and I are going to check out the Goodwill for cheap house wares. That's all we've planned for the morning. Then Matt gets off work at 12 and I'm going to spend the afternoon with him.
The house is quiet.. I think I'll read my book until my eyelids get so heavy that I can sleep :P

What a great day :)
Today was a wonderful day. I got up early with Sydney and we ate breakfast together at 7- we're still on an oatmeal kick, today it had oats, oat bran, almond milk, mashed banana, and a teaspoon of maple syrup. Yum! We packed lunch- vegetables in brown rice that we made in a huge pot the other day, intentionally so we'd have lots left over to eat this week. Then she was off to work and I still had tons of time because I didn't have to go to work until 10. I got ready, then headed downtown and met Matthew in the middle. We went to Subway so he could get breakfast, and then we just walked around a bit, enjoying each other's company until I had to be at work.
Work went by SO quickly! I only worked until 3 and it is my week to wash all the buckets so I was occupied with that today. We cleaned out the walk in refrigerator that we use for flowers yesterday, replacing all the buckets with new ones, so there were so many buckets to wash. I didn't mind it at all though, it's easy work and it made time go by so fast. When I got out of work Matt was waiting and he had exciting news for me. In one day he managed to finalize a place to live that would let him move in tonight AND he landed a part time job at a new mailing center in town. He moved into a house with two other guys in their early twenties. We walked to see the house and meet them yesterday, and everything felt very right. His room mates seem like friendly, good people and they were eager to get someone renting the room which was just what Matt needed. He's happy because the room comes with a queen sized bed, a ceiling fan, and Direct TV :P
How he managed to find a job today is crazy. He was just chatting with the owner of the new mailing center while he was waiting on a fax, and the guy ended up walking with him to Cost-U-Less and then offering him a job working in the place of his current employee! We met her this morning when we stopped by to see if they had a fax machine. She seemed lost and was generally unhelpful, I can see why the owner would be eager to replace her. I'm just very excited for Matt because it's a great start, and so soon! I'll let you all know how it goes, his first day of work is this Friday :)
Right now Sydney and I are on our computers, about to go to bed. I just set up online banking for my Hawaiian bank account, and she just ordered a pair of these awesome shoes: http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/products_footwear.cfm
Today was extra-exciting for me because I finally got all the boxes mom sent! I've spent the afternoon unpacking them and re-organizing the kitchen to fit it all :P Tonight we went to dinner at a Thai place close to our house that is my new favorite place to get dinner. For $10 I can get a huge plate of stir fried veggies in all different choices of sauce and there is so much that I eat half with rice for dinner and bring the other half with rice for lunch :) Tonight I got "Evil Shrimp" which was shrimp, bamboo shoots, beans, carrots, water chestnuts, broccoli, and some leafy greens all in a peanut sauce. Describing it out like that doesn't do the taste justice.. it was so delicious. Thinking about getting to eat it for lunch tomorrow makes me happy.
But not as happy as getting dark chocolate in the mail from mom today!! Boy, did that put a smile on my face :D
PS- I just realized that I haven't mentioned that LUCIE IS HERE! She came in yesterday and everything is going great. "Reunited and it feels so good!" hahaha.. Really though, it's already so much fun having the three of us together again. Laughs are extra contagious with three :)

Happy 4th of July!
I just got recently got off from a looong day at work- we left at 6am and drove to the sight of the wedding. It was tedious but lots of fun, definitely a new experience. I liked being part of the joint effort, with everyone really working together towards a common goal. The reception tent started out a mess and ended up looking so beautiful- the bride's colors were white, cream, and light pink so it all looked so delicate and our flowers were absolutely stunning. I wish I could have gotten pictures =/
Matt and I are going to get dinner and then walk to bayfront for fireworks. If Sydney decides to get up from her nap she'll come too :)

Ahhhh :)
Finally!!
I've managed to get the internet turned on at the house. It was quite a task. The adult world can be tedious, I've found! Since I last wrote, I have paid my first bill (an electric bill for the first week we lived here, a whopping $27 :P), bought a dresser off of Craigslist, GOT A JOB, and welcomed my boyfriend to the islands :)
The dresser I love, Lucie found it for me on Craigslist for just $100 and it is vintage, all wooden, with six huge drawers and three small ones down the middle. It is painted a nice shade of yellow (and I'm picky about yellow) and the guy delivered it to me for just $10, so I couldn't be any more pleased. It was a relief to finally finish unpacking my suitcases and put them in the basement. I finally feel completely moved in :)
Even more exciting, I've been hired as a customer service sales associate at a flower shop!! I believe I talked about dropping my resume off there the second week I was here. When I did, I was told that the position had been filled, but apparently I made a good impression on the manager that I spoke to because she told the owner that I seemed intelligent and so I ended up getting a voice mail from the lady that owns the shop asking me to call her and answer some questions. The phone call went well; we scheduled an interview for the next day, and that went so well that she gave me the position on the spot! I'm just so proud of myself because it's an accomplishment, considering that I have no experience and I'm a haole (white) girl fresh to the island. She gave me the other girl's hours for the rest of the week and I came in to work the next day! (They had just found out that the other girl has dyslexia, so she couldn't properly take all the phone orders, which is the #1 responsibility for this position)
I can't realistically completely describe work on here, because it would take too long and also it seems like I shouldn't give out details online because it would be violating some of the business' privacy. But what I will say is that I LOVE IT. I'm in charge of handling the front of the store: taking care of any customers when they come in to buy things, order things, pick up things, etc; answering the phone; inputting all the orders in the computer; and then on the side I help out with all kinds of flower shop related busy work. The environment is so friendly and I feel like I'm already starting to fit in as part of the family, even though it's only been two weeks. Everyone has been so helpful in getting me trained, and since I'm working hard and learning quickly, they don't fuss at me much when I make little mistakes. So yes, it's an enjoyable working environment and I'm doing well. Time passes so quickly since I'm working on lots of different tasks all day long! And since I'm the only customer service associate, I'll be working 5 days a week, exactly what I needed to pay the bills :)
I suppose that's enough about work for now. Just know that I'm feeling very blessed to have a new job that I love. This weekend is a HUGE weekend for the store, we're doing a big wedding. I wish I could write whose wedding it is, but I don't want to cross the line with the privacy situation. Email me if you want to know :P
I've saved the best for last. The one thing that makes me happier than ever, that really just bubbles over my happiness, is that Matt has arrived :) It is so great to have him around again. He keeps a smile on my face all day long.. I'm not quite sure how he does it! I think it starts with him walking me to work in the morning. And then when I know he'll be waiting outside when I get off, I just can't help but smile! He's working on finding someone looking for a room mate, since it would be difficult for him to rent a house and then hope to find room mates on his own. The only trouble is that most college kids go home for the summer, so no one is really looking for room mates... But it will work out. It sure did for me!!
Love to all :)
